  Krizna Jama

En : Krizna Jama (Cave) is one of the best known karst caverns in the world. It is particularly renowned for its chain of twenty two underground lakes of crystal clear water, separated by calcite (calcium carbonate) barriers.
The cave was first do*****ented in 1832. The early explorers had come across the skeletons of bears that had once inhabited the cave but it wasn''t until some years later when Ferdinand von Hochstetter, a member of the Vienna Academy of Science, visited the cave that serious archaeological excavations were started. In 1878 he and six others of his expedition along with Ferdinand Schulz, Curator of the Ljubljana Museum, excavated over 2000 cave bear bones in only four days. These were estimated to be the remains of no less than 100 individual animals. Two complete skeletons were assembled from the excavated material and these can be seen today as part of the collection in Vienna Natural Science Museum.

  Predjama
Description: Today we take you to the biggest and most world-renowned Slovenian cave system – the Postojna caves. A two million-year old and 27km long system of subterranean caves is one of the most easily accessible networks of underground caves in the world. A ride by electric train will be followed by a guided walk through a series of cave halls with stalactites, pillars and translucent curtains that create unforgettable impressions. The underground system is home to the mysterious, unique and rare amphibian Proteus Anguinus, or ‘human fish’, as it is popularly called here. Only 9km away stands one of the most interesting baroque castles of Slovenia, the Predjama castle. It appears to hang dramatically in the middle of a 123m high rocky cliff.

  Vilenica Cave
Description: The cave, which in bygone centuries triggered the imagination of visitors, is believed by locals to be the home of good fairies and this is how Vilenica got its name ("vile" is the Slovene word for fairies). "Vilenica" is also the name of an international literary award, presented annually within its cavernous Dance Hall.
Today the cave is fully illuminated and some 450 metres of the more than 1.3km of galleries are open to the public. A guided tour lasts about an hour. At the same time, the wonderful and carefully arranged area around the cave offers the possibility of organised barbecues and meetings in a pleasant natural milieu.
